Lucent: Toward Strategic Engagement
Lucent: Toward Strategic Engagement
This chapter describes a case in which the unions were deeply involved in the company's decision to outsource its manufacturing capability, and were able to negotiate employment and union agreements with the purchasers at the same time as the other aspects of the sale. This resulted in a relatively peaceful process, but still involved intense conflicts among the partner unions as well as between unions and management. The obstacles to change remained great; the increased trust from dialogue helped, but did not solve the tensions involved in transforming the corporation.
