The United Irish League orchestrated the most significant agitation in its twenty-year history in the years between 1904 and 1908. The Ranch War remains the most serious outbreak of agrarian conflict in 20th-century Ireland, and takes its place alongside the Land War and the Plan of Campaign as a major episode in the broader struggle between landlord and tenant. For this reason, the Ranch War has attracted some historical attention. However, the existing accounts are not by and large studies of ‘popular politics’, as they tend to view the agitation from above, from the vantage point of London or Dublin, rather than from the perspective of rank and file activists. This chapter examines the Ranch War and provides a new interpretation of the dynamics of the conflict.
