Introduction
Introduction
This introductory chapter briefly surveys the history of the heart in literature and criticism, and considers its metaphorical connotations. Using Teresa Brennan's concept of the ‘transmission of affect’, it argues that the heart in Victorian poetry is vital in terms of this communication of emotion from author to reader, and that the rhythm of a poem might be one of the agents of this transmission.
