This introductory chapter explains the theme of this volume, which is about post-1989 national minority rights discourse in Europe. This book analyses national minority rights discourse in relation to the three major political approaches of European international relations, which include the politics of security, the politics of democratisation, and the politics of integration. It provides an overview of the problems, tensions, and issues national minority rights have in relation to state sovereignty and international law.
