This chapter explores export and transit trade in the Russian empire through the seventeenth century. Trade arenas included: the White Sea, where from the 1550s naval goods (timber, tar, and rope) and semi-manufactured items were exported by British and Dutch, who brought in colonial goods; Baltic ports (Riga, Narva, Reval); overland trade west into Poland-Lithuania; import and export from India, Persia, and Central Asia through Astrakhan and the Volga, as well as transit trade across southern Siberia. The role of Bukharan, Indian, and Armenian merchants was key here. The chapter further explores Russia’s generally protectionist trade policy, taxation, and industry.
