Reception and Influence

(p.351) 4 Reception and Influence
Latin Epics of the New Testament

Oxford University Press

These three writers exercised great and widespread influence as educational texts in Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages, fulfilling the dual role of Christian edification and instruction in grammar and poetic diction. But their influence is seen not only in school-texts but in the work of various medieval poets, whether these make a passing allusion (like the Anglo-Saxons) or attempt something similar (like the German poet Otfrid). In the Renaissance they begin strongly, but are gradually overtaken by a new, more expansive style adopted by Christian epicists. It is possible, but far from certain, that one or more of them was known to John Milton, whether from his schooldays or from later study.
