Party Politics in New Democracies

Stephen White (Contributor Webpage)

This chapter examines political party development in Russia, from the late 19th century to the post-communist era. It considers the popular legitimacy and organizational strength of political parties. It then examines their role in the process of government, in particular, governance, interest articulation and aggregation, political recruitment, and political participation and communication. It shows that Russian political parties operate within a uniquely adverse environment characterized by scepticism or hostility from the public, a weak link between election outcomes and party representation in the Duma, and lack of membership.
