This chapter justifies the comparison of Islam and Catholicism. It defines the extent to which Islam and Catholicism can be compared as “religions” and considers the sources of democratic hostility present in either religious tradition. The chapter argues that the common origins of the hostility found in both traditions towards democracy reasonably justify the formulation of some general hypotheses about the effects of religiously friendly democratization. At the same time, the chapter acknowledges how significant differences between the history and ideas and institutions of Islam and Catholicism affect the shape of that change, creating important variations within a general trend.
