Conversation without Mobilization

Chapter 5 examines why, in spite of constant political arguments on IGN.com’s posting boards and the fact that people in the space form long-lasting relationships, the space has not produced any real political mobilization. The lack of anonymity on IGN.com means that people form smaller groups within the larger group. Large-group cohesion is further weakened by an extremely accessible board format that allows for private conversation among users and minimizes a need for a strict lexicon or a knowledge of community history to indicate belonging among users. These factors, tied to a high level of regulation of speech and behavior on IGN.com, undermine collective group mobilization. However, there is some indication that the conversations on IGN.com do influence user beliefs.
