Resisting Genocide

Fatma Müge Göçek

Oxford University Press

This chapter examines the construction of the word ‘Righteous’ as part of the title ‘Righteous among the Nations’ that was created in Israel to honor non-Jews who saved Jews by risking their lives. It traces the word's Judeo-Christian heritage and draws on a more philosophical perspective to deconstruct the notion and suggests a redefinition that is more adapted to the aid supplied by Turks to the Armenians during the genocide in 1915. More specifically, it argues that the concept of ‘Righteous’ must be broadened to the notion of ‘just people’ that takes into account the Muslim concept of justice.
