(p.73) 6 Lessons from the Local

Oxford University Press

This chapter considers the distinctive context of domestic violence in rural communities in the United States and in sub-Saharan Africa. It identifies the unique variables affecting domestic violence work in rural communities and draws from innovative African programs to suggest new strategies for rural communities in the United States. The chapter examines how local advocates and service providers in Africa have developed innovative and effective strategies for the rural context, paying particular attention to the use of international human rights laws to promote anti-violence campaigns; the connections between violence and health; strategies to address economic harm; the use of public education and media campaigns; and the impact of gender roles on intimate partner violence.
