Inertia, Upheavals, Inequality
This chapter describes the confluence of upheavals and inertia producing new risks and uncertainties, but also possibilities for the development of updated and purposive career and life-course options. New and enduring inequalities are resulting from an unraveling social contract and unraveling retirement. The resulting mismatches are upending the conventional, albeit gendered, linear life-course template—first learning, then working, then retiring—developed in the middle of the last century. This template is characterized by three interrelated institutional logics, enduring sets of assumptions and beliefs shaping expectations and behavior. First is the logic of the unencumbered worker, second is the lockstep institutional logic, and third is the hard-work-pays-off institutional logic. The chapter concludes with a description of three fundamental mismatches: the work-time mismatch, the life-course mismatch, and the risk–safety net mismatch.
