Transforming Institutions and Lives
This chapter describes how the gender revolution can inform innovations addressing the three key mismatches—the work-time mismatch, the life-course mismatch, and the risk-safety net mismatch—confronting contemporary advanced societies in North America and Europe. The key to realization of an encore to conventional adulthood is the fit between Boomers’ needs and preferences and available, sustainable options for engagement and social protections. Boomers are in positions of power in politics, business, and communities, in positions to reset the rules and launch new customs and clockworks around work, careers, schooling, and retirement. Given Boomers’ sheer numbers, enabling the customizing of careers, retirement, and the life course will offer enormous dividends of creativity, talent, health, and possibility for renewal—for individuals, but also for their families, workplaces, and communities.
