Beyond the Score

Nicholas Cook

Oxford University Press

This chapter explores three distinct intersections between theory and analysis on the one hand and performance on the other: what the chapter calls theorist’s analysis, performer’s analysis, and performance analysis. The first is the traditional approach of North American music theory, as illustrated by Schenkerian analysis: performance is understood as based on the projection of structure, so analysis is based on the score and applied to performance. This approach neglects much that gives meaning to performance, and it results in a damagingly hierarchical relationship between analyst and performer. Performer’s analysis is a quite different kind of analysis carried out by performers for purposes that are distinct from those of theorist’s analysis. Performance analysis is the analysis of performances, whether live or recorded, and is the principal topic of this book.
