The Control of Addiction in Ancient India 1
This chapter examines addiction (sakti) in Hinduism and its renunciation in ancient India. It discusses the corpus of scientific texts known as the shastras which focus on how ancient India addressed the subject of addiction for householders, rather than for renouncers. In particular, it analyzes the texts dealing with the three Goals of Life: dharma, artha, and kama. It also considers what the Kamasutra says about the control of addiction.
