In this chapter, the author reflects on her decision to write a book about the ancient history of Hinduism, the politics underlying the endeavor, and the fight raging around the issue of Hindu pluralism in India. She talks about the controversy surrounding Hindutva, a territorial, racial and fundamentalist form of Hinduism that has inspired violence against both Muslims and Christians as well as the spread of fundamentalism. She recounts her first encounter with the Hindutvavadis in 2002 and why she decided to write the book The Hindus: An Alternative History, published in 2009.
