This chapter takes as its departure the divided critical reception in 1896 of Goldmark’s opera Das Heimchen am Herd (The Cricket on the Hearth), which drew from Vienna’s radical German nationalist critics a vicious antisemitic critique. It continues with Goldmark’s response to this criticism, which took the form of a little-known essay entitled “Gedanken über Form und Stil (Eine Abwehr)” (Thoughts about Form and Style [A Defense]). Here the composer forcefully defends his self-perception as a German artist from those radical late-century critics who insisted that he and his music were—on the basis of his “race”—indelibly Jewish and could never be German. The chapter also considers a much earlier essay from 1858 entitled “Eine Ansicht über Fortschritt” (A View on Progress), which is shown to problematize any essentializing notion that the exotic-sounding melodies the composer sometimes favored manifested his inescapable non-German Fremdartigkeit (foreignness).
