This chapter examines issues surrounding the facilitation of creative thought within the domain of the school-based performance ensemble. It begins with an examination of the notion of creativity within musical performance, identifying musical expression as the chief venue for facilitating creative thought in the ensemble performance context. Next, the literature on engaging students in creative activities within the rehearsal setting is reviewed. Finally, the role of the public school conductor is discussed with regard to fostering student creativity and independence within the performing ensemble, including practical strategies that a practicing conductor-teacher may use within his or her rehearsal.
