Abstract

Lionel Bart’s Oliver! is one of the most popular English musicals of all time, and it remains the most significant English musical produced during the “golden age” of the Broadway musical. However, Oliver!’s London roots, along with its pronounced “Englishness,” complicate its being designated a “Broadway musical,” particularly in light of the traditional belief that musical theater is fundamentally American.
