Relationship between Internal Structure, Accommodation, and Civil War

Relationship between Internal Structure, Accommodation, and Civil War

(p.151) Chapter 7 Relationship between Internal Structure, Accommodation, and Civil War
Inside the Politics of Self-Determination

Kathleen Gallagher Cunningham

Oxford University Press

This chapter examines the effects of accommodation and civil war on the internal structure of self-determination (SD) groups and states. Through quantitative analysis of the cohesion and fragmentation of states and SD groups over time, the chapter shows that accommodation and civil war both play a role in shaping the longer-term political structure and dynamics of these actors, particularly SD groups. The structure of states themselves, to a lesser extent, is also shaped by conflict and accommodation. This chapter highlights the dynamic nature of internal politics within states and SD groups, in particular emphasizing the role of change in the number of internal factions. Self-determination politics is shaped by the interdependence of actor structure, conflict, and accommodation, and the chapter suggests that effects of conflict and accommodation on SD group structure can, to some degree, be seen as successful management of the costs of SD disputes
