This chapter discusses the development of sign language use in education for deaf children in Spain and focuses in particular on the co-enrollment experience of four schools in the Madrid region. The chapter describes the teaching philosophy and evaluation of methods and also documents current research on a group of children’s bilingual development in Spanish and Spanish Sign Language. Results indicate that children who receive a cochlear implant early are developing both languages within expected levels, but during development there are interesting patterns of interaction between the two languages. The chapter concludes with a call for more collaborative work between researchers and educationalists with the aim of providing an evidence base on sign bilingual practices for the future.
