The Making of a Fundamentalist

(p.9) 1 Beginnings
Fighting Fundamentalist

Markku Ruotsila

Oxford University Press

Covering the years 1906 to 1936, this chapter deals with McIntire’s childhood, youth, and his intellectual maturation in early twentieth century Oklahoma, at the Princeton Theological Seminary as student of J. Gresham Machen and during the controversy that was fought in the Presbyterian Church in the mid-1930s. His evolving worldview is contextualized with the yeoman individualism of his Oklahoma childhood and with his exposure to the faith-inflected socialist movement of Oklahoma, with the biblical inerrancy teaching with which he came into contact at Princeton, and with Machen’s and Abraham Kuyper’s anticollectivist public theologies. The chapter serves at the same time as a reassessment of the early fundamentalist movement’s organized quest for cultural and political power.
