Strategic design-by-analogy is a promising engine for open innovation. Designers are exposed to solutions from other domains and then map these solutions to the design problem at hand. Although this methodology has been found fruitful in product design processes, there are currently no practical ways to find good analogies from the millions of possible sources. The chapter reviews the effects of different types of analogical stimuli on designer output quality to build a better understanding of design-by-analogy from a cognitive perspective. Then, it presents and tests a new computational algorithm that uses a combination of advanced Bayesian and natural language processing data mining techniques to automatically organize large repositories of existing design solutions and display them in simple visual structures. Designers can efficiently search these structures for diverse but relevant analogies to a given design problem. This approach provides novel and meaningful insights regarding the interrelatedness of different solutions.
