In this chapter, I address a few of the main debates about the causes and consequences of the genocide in Rwanda. Four hypotheses regarding causes—Rwanda as modern-day Malthusian crisis, poverty and poor economic prospects motivating combatants, interethnic inequality generating genocide, and state capacity and organization facilitating a deadly efficiency—are discussed both in light of the theoretical explanations proposed and in light of summaries of the relevant empirical findings. Each one comes with strong evidence in support, but with substantial gaps remaining. I also discuss some recent research on the long-run effect of the genocide on economic conditions in Rwanda.
