Area Congregations in a Suburban Boom Town
Chapter 6 discusses area congregations in one of the metropolitan region’s most attractive locations, the west suburban boom town of Naperville. The chapter describes how these cases offer place-dependent congregational communities in an increasingly transient urban era, and also explains why they exert relatively little influence on their urban context, Congregation Beth Shalom (a nonaffiliated synagogue) exerting slightly more influence than either Calvary Church (a Pentecostal megachurch) or Wheatland Salem United Methodist Church (an evangelical-inspired mainline congregation). Chapter 6 also discusses selected Catholic parishes in order to explore the roles played by religious identity, choice, and mobility in the creation of congregational communities in places like Naperville.
