(p.159) 8 Meditation and Mindfulness

Paul Verhaeghen

This chapter gathers all the information from the previous chapters. Meditation has effects on attention, stress, and well-being. Most of these effects are just as large as those for standard psychological, educational, and behavioral interventions. In clinical samples, mindfulness/meditation likewise has broad effects, comparable (in most cases) to those of standard practice. Some of these effects already appear after brief interventions, but there are dose-response relationships as well, suggesting that more practice is more beneficial. It traces the trajectory from brain activation to mind to life, and reiterates a few of the scientifically sound recommendations for meditation practice that follow from the studies reviewed in the book. Some recommendations for further research are also offered.
