The chapter outlines the dominant or hypothesis-deduction account of scientific method—formulating hypotheses, then testing them predictively. It shows that because real-world phenomena virtually never fit this method’s strict requirements, scientists typically simplify the method in ways that can cause devastating errors. In particular, using this method in highly idealized situations, as at the Maxey Flats dump site, where measurement is impossible, can lead to great harm.
