Food is essential to keep our bodies and souls together. Food provides energy required for keeping us active both physically as well as mentally. The F.A.O. defines it: ‘Food security exists when all people at all times have physical social and economic access to sufficient safe and nutritious food to meet their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life. Food security is a function of availability of food at affordable price in the lean period of agricultural season when there is no production from the field. Food security has regional deficits and problems of equity. There are gender variations in developing societies but in worst cases male children are fed better food as compared to the female children. The literature review has highlighted regional as well as gender differences in the food security. In case of India, to ensure accessibility of food grains earlier PDS and then TPDS was introduced. The review has accommodated as many studies as could be located in the literature published between 2003 and 2009.
