Barton takes up his position as Resident in Hyderabad, charged with the task of dealing more firmly than his predecessor with the Nizam whose corrupt practices are causing concern, while his wife organizes charitable functions, raising money to set up baby clinics and clubs for women. Living in the fine white Residency, they enter into a life of great ceremony. The Nizam’s contradictory character is described and the fears that as he increasingly comes under the influence of extremists, he might join with Turkey in a jihad.
