Opening the book’s first section, ‘Education, Employment, Economy and Human Development’, Chapter 2 examines data on access to education. The discussion includes an analysis of longitudinal data on levels of mass education and structure of different levels of education according to socio-religious communities (SRCs) and on quality of education. Key findings include recent trends of greater improvements in literacy in rural areas for all communities except Muslim–OBCs, improvement in matriculation-level education for all communities except Muslims, and attainment rates of higher education which are lower for Muslims (4.1 per cent) than OBCs (5.7 per cent) yet not as low as SC/STs.
