Long before the start of the war but shortly after the assumption of office by President Rajapakse, the Press in Sri Lanka kept enduring attacks from known and unknown entities. Then on, attacks on individual journalists or raids on newspaper offices kept happening on a regular basis. The assassination of Sunday Leader editor Lasantha Wickrematunge in broad daylight on a Colombo street in 2009 was indicative of how brazen it could get. By the end of the war, over sixty journalists had left the country for security reasons. The Paris-based International Journalists Federation kept demanding an end to impunity —but to little effect. Things did improve after a new President was elected in January 2015, it was not easy. Two more journalists had to leave the country in May-June 2015 fearing for their lives.
