The two Chinese contributors detail the rationale behind China’s ambitious ‘Bridgehead strategy’ that seeks to develop all forms of connectivity with neighbours like Vietnam to India and other countries in south-east and South Asia. It argues that this strategy has been pursued as a logical sequel to China’s ‘Develop the West’ policy, by which Beijing sought to develop its western and south-western provinces which had fallen behind the national growth levels. It also argues that the ‘Bridgehead strategy’ is the starting point for a much bigger strategic initiative – the One Belt One Road and the Silk Route . The contributors argue that China is pressing ahead with the ‘Bridgehead’ strategy in spite of tensions over maritime disputes.
