Influx Devil
The Spanner in India–Bangladesh Relations
In this chapter, it is argued that the highly emotive issue of illegal migrants is preventing Northeastern states, barring Tripura, from turning to Bangladesh for mutually beneficial economic engagement. The study shows it is so pervasive that even the domestic development projects often get bogged down because they are viewed by the powerful lobbies in the region as steps towards legitimising the so called illegal migrants. The contributor argues that it is imperative to bridge this trust deficit as Bangladesh holds the key for the region’s economic prosperity. For that, he says, misconception about the spectre of illegal migrants, which is mostly a notional threat based on hype as suggested by census figures, should first be cleared.
