The Agartala Doctrine

Biswaji Mohapatra

Oxford University Press

The North Eastern region is important for India for its security, trade, commerce and connectivity across the borders . It is said that the Government of India announced the Look East Policy not only to revive the socio-economic and cultural ties amongst people and countries in the region but also to kick start faster economic development for the people .However despite more than two decades of the launching of this policy, there are complaints of lack of economic development in the area. That raises questions on the effectiveness of the Look East Policy. The debate around these issues have been analysed in detail to take a close look at the assumptions behind such policy and to critically examine them from the policy perspective, for the interest of the region.
