The Roots of Violence—II

The Roots of Violence—II

Jainism towards Human Freedom*

(p.121) 27 The Roots of Violence—II

Jainism, through its very long history, sought to understand the many layers of veils with which our perceptions are covered, some of them beautiful, others ugly. Either way, Jaina thinkers show how those veils of perception prevent us from seeing truth, and then lead us to doing violence both to ourselves and to others, even when everyone fears violence. In this essay Badrinath mentions that of the many sources of wrong perceiving mentioned in Jaina philosophy, primary are ‘delusion’ (mithyatva) and ‘passions’ (kashaya). The question who decides what ‘right perceptions’ are, and what ‘truth’ is, a question that comes up again and again in all human relationships, personal and social, is answered in Jainism in realistic and practical terms.
