This chapter reviews the course of Sankrityayan’s life through a critical study of his autobiography, Merī jīvan yātrā (The journey of my life). The basic facts from Sankrityayan’s autobiography about his life provide the necessary background information for proceeding further. The chapter analyses the genres of autobiography and biography as popular literature within the literary landscape of 20th-century India and highlights the unique space that Sankrityayan’s autobiography occupies within it. It will moves on to consider why Sankrityayan felt such an imperative to write his autobiography in a large number of thick instalments, and why he also engaged in writing biographies of many other persons.
