Debates on Civilization, Islam, and Modernity: Some Critical Perspectives on the Current Agenda

(p.1) Introduction
Debates on Civilization in the Muslim World

Lutfi Sunar

Oxford University Press

This chapter summarizes the fourteen chapters in the remainder of the book. The terms ‘civilization’, ‘culture’, and ‘modernity’ are defined, analysed, and compared and contrasted with each other. The geographic range is truly world-wide: Asia, Europe, Africa, North America. The typical formulation of Western modernity as the juggernaut that crushes the rest of the world will be re-formulated as non-Western civilizations both resisting and assimilating aspects of Western civilization are considered. The works of a host of writers on civilization—Western and non-Western, historical and contemporary—are discussed, including Samuel Huntington, Condorcet, Montesquieu, Locke, Anthony Giddens, and Alija Izetbegovic, among others.

Keywords:   civilization, culture, modernity, Asia, Europe, modernity, non-Western
