Debates on Civilization in the Muslim World

Syed Farid Alatas

Oxford University Press

This paper looks at the various critiques of modern society in the context of the phenomenon of erring modernization. It is argued that various diagnoses of the problems and shortcomings of modern civilization contribute to our understanding of the origins and nature of erring modernization. Although this paper reflects on the Muslim world, it does not take the view that the Muslim world is a homogenous entity and is characterized by problems that do not exist elsewhere. The aim of this chapter is to reflect on certain common problems to be found in the Muslim world and how they have been thought about by Muslims themselves.

Keywords:   modern society, erring modernization, Muslim world, Islamic civilization
