Bilateral trade forms only a small part of the total trade between Bangladesh and India. Problems of logistics, trade practices, and lack of transport/transit agreements and infrastructure are major constraints leading to lesser bilateral trade and competitiveness. Though measures have been considered aiming to reduce physical and non-physical barriers to transportation and transit, the costs are increasingly becoming critical. It is clear that free movement of vehicles across the border and an agreement to this end is necessary. However, progress on these agreements between the countries has been very slow. Concerns about political ownership affect overall trade, connectivity, and economic integration in the Eastern South Asia sub-region, and between South Asia and Southeast Asia generally. This chapter narrates the current state of negotiations of such agreements, outlines the challenges in regard to their implementation, and argues the benefits that would accrue to both countries if they are implemented effectively.
