First Love Again!

First Love Again!

The Painter of Signs

(p.205) 15 First Love Again!
R.K. Narayan

Ranga Rao

Oxford University Press

This chapter recounts The Painter of Signs where Narayan creates an idealist sign painter. Set in a conservative town in south India, this work is the biggest surprise from Narayan. A modern young man, swearing by rationalism and anti-love, lands in love and trouble, until released by his beloved who is a modern Indian woman. As a story of first love, one draws comparison with The Bachelor of Arts. In this late novel, Narayan performs a sort of metempsychosis; he gets inside and analyses a young man: a rajasic, modern young man at that.

Keywords:   comparison with The Bachelor of Arts, first love, openness to sexual drive, romance, modern Indian woman, family
