Ranga Rao states in this chapter that one of the most popular of Narayan’s novels, The English Teacher is also a victim of lopsided reception: that the novel falls in two distinctive halves, the first being autobiographical, and the second dealing with yogic practice and reunion with the discarnate spirit of Narayan’s wife. There are differing opinions on these two parts of the work: while some found the second part disappointing, others found it quite absorbing. However, one must note that The English Teacher is fiction, not autobiography. And the fiction of the novel becomes clear only as presenting the story of a sensitive man’s self-development: with the hero seeking and accepting his place in some eternal scheme, linking The English Teacher with The Bachelor of Arts, a precursor, and more substantively with Mr. Sampath which followed.
