This chapter presents an essay on the patterns of contact and mutual perception in the dual monarchy of Austria and Hungary during the period from 1840 to 1867. It examines the commonalities and antipathies that played major roles in creating the settlements which were reached between the two halves of the Monarchy, and in frustrating those which were not. Some of the major political developments during this period include the October Diploma and February Patent of 1860–61 and the Austro-Hungarian Compromise of 1867.
