Urwick Orr and Partners
Urwick Orr and Partners
On leaving the International Management Institute (IMI), Urwick set up a management consultancy in conjunction with John Leslie Orr. The two had complementary skills and contacts and the consultancy rapidly became one of the most influential in Britain for its novel ideas and strong principles. Nevertheless, tensions appeared between Urwick and Orr, in considerable part due to Urwick's activities outside the consultancy; by this time, he was becoming a substantial figure in the British management world. These tensions were to lead to a vote between the two on the consultancy board, which Urwick won, leading to Orr's departure. The consultancy continued to flourish after the Second World War, with Urwick resigning as managing director at 60 in 1951 but continuing to play an influential role as chairman until he emigrated to Australia in 1961.
