Intentionality as a Pragmatically Mediated Semantic Relation
Intentionality as a Pragmatically Mediated Semantic Relation
Pragmatism seeks to explain semantic intentionality in terms of practical intentionality. This chapter explains the use of intentional vocabulary as making explicit the relations between the modal sense of ‘incompatibility’ and ‘consequence’ that articulates the structure of the objective realm and the normative sense of ‘incompatibility’ and ‘consequence’ that articulates the structure of the subjective realm. Meaning-use analysis reveals intentionality itself as a pragmatically mediated semantic relation.
