Multiculturalism and Religion
Multiculturalism and Religion
The first part of the chapter examines if the bearer of the rights should be individuals or communities. It argues that too much emphasis on the freedom of an individual can lead one to forget the importance of cultural dimension. The second part differentiates between cultural diversity and personal freedom and explores the tendency of some Muslim scholars to see religious freedom as simply the right of non-Muslims to remain under Islamic rule without interference. The third section suggests that a culture, exemplified by a religion, is valuable in itself, since it is the source of meaning for its adherents. The fourth section examines the idea pursued by multiculturalism regarding the equality of cultures. The last section investigates discrimination between religions.
