Augustine's Text of John

The analysis of the citations of John in Augustine's works composed after 419 reveals the increasing influence of the Vulgate. In secondary citations the Old Latin forms typical of his mental text are replaced by examples which match the Vulgate. Nonetheless, there are still examples of his customary text, including some unique readings, and in De dono perseuerantiae from 429 Augustine appears to be relying on an Old Latin exemplar for a four-verse citation from John 12. The two works against Maximinus show the similarity of the Arian's text to Codex Monacensis. Augustine's collection of biblical testimonia, the Speculum quis ignorat, has had its original form of text replaced with the Vulgate by a later editor.
