This chapter surveys the history of the radially-organized stem from the relatively disorganized thallus of early land plants, to dichotomizing axes of primitive vascular plants, and finally to the massive, secondarily-thickened stems of seed plants such as those of Sequoia, which may rise over 100 metres above the ground. The mechanisms of stem growth by apical meristems in a variety of plants and the genes controlling shoot apical meristem function in flowering plants such as WUSCHEL, CLAVATA, and KNOTTED-LIKE HOMEOBOX genes (Knox) are discussed in an evolutionary context.
