The root is the essential organ of mineral nutrient cycling in complex land plants. This chapter deals with the probable evolution of the root from dimorphic stem systems, to the complex gene interactions that result in root formation and patterning in angiosperms, including the important leaf developmental genes SCARECROW, SHORTROOT, and PLETHORA. The primary root is formed in the embryo as part of embryogenesis and the relationship of this process to the evolutionary origin of roots is discussed. The array of forms that roots can take, storage organs, thorns, nodules, etc, are also placed in a morphological and molecular framework.
