This chapter addresses the evolution of the ovule, the key innovation of the seed plants. The mechanisms by which megasporangia gained coverings or integuments to become ovule (integumented megasporangia) are discussed. The internalization of the gametophyte life cycle with a megaspore and megasporangium is also discussed as is the evolution of microsporangia and megasporangia (heterospory) from a homosporous condition. The molecular control of this process, and the genes responsible, are detailed where they are known, including many of the genes necessary for successful seed reproduction in angiosperms.
