This chapter addresses the evolutionary events leading up to the flower, and the likely molecular developmental events which accompanied it. It also covers many other sporangium-associated structures, from the sporogonia of early land plants to the compound cones of conifers. Flowers show an enormous range of evolutionary innovation due to modifications of the floral phyllomes. These are surveyed together with what is known about the genetic control of these features, such as the MADS-box genes responsible for patterning the flower and CYCLOIDEA genes responsible for floral symmetry.
